Celebrated, controversial atheist Sam Harris hits Australia in 2016

Neuroscientist, author, philosopher and prominent ‘New Atheism’ force Sam Harris to embark on Australian tour

In the ongoing conflict between faith and science, few figures have rattled as many cages as America’s neuroscientist and ‘New Atheist’ Sam Harris, who just announced his debut Australian tour for January 2016.

Along with fellow pronounced advocates of secularism such as Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett and the late Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris spearheads the ‘New Atheism’ movement with the goal of advancing humanity into an order that does away with dogmatism and embraces empiricism, removing religious thought in favour of rational thought.

Harris is the author of bestselling and award-winning books such as The End of Faith: Religion, Terror and the Future of Reason (2005), Letter to a Christian Nation (2006), The Moral Landscape: How Science Can Determine Human Values (2010), Free Will (2012), and most recently Waking Up: a Guide to Spirituality Without Religion (2014). His upcoming book is Islam and the Future of Tolerance: A Dialogue, co-written with Maajid Nawaz (author of Radical: My Journey out of Islamist Extremism (2012)), slated for release in October 2015. He has also been a feature guest on The Colbert Report, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The O’Reilly Factor, The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, and a notable 2014 appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher.

Harris is also the co-founder of the non-profit organisation ‘Project Reason’, with the goal of promoting scientific knowledge and secular values in society; the organisation has attracted interest and support from numerous high-profile celebrities and academics, such as Lawrence Krauss, Rebecca Goldstein, Salman Rushdie, Steven Pinker, Bill Maher, and Dawkins, Dennett and the late Hitchens themselves. The endgame for Harris’ mission? “We have a choice. We have two options as human beings. We have a choice between conversation and war. That’s it. Conversation and violence. And faith is a conversation-stopper.

Think Inc. – the team behind the Australian tours of Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, Dr. Michio Kaku, Dr. Cornel West, and The ‘Amazing’ James Randi – are bringing to Australia An Evening with Sam Harris in January of 2016. Audiences will be engaged with this most celebrated and controversial of critical thinkers on the matters of science, spirituality, and secularisation in an age where their conflict with religion is as amplified as ever.
